Jakarta in June

Morning Mosque - Staring back

As I have mentioned in other posts, I am lucky to be able to travel every now and again through work. Most of June I have been in Jakarta. As with most trips, getting out to see the sites is usually very limited. This trip, my hotel balcony was the main stage for photography. I took my Gorillapod and Olympus EM-1 with me this time. The Gorillapod is great for balconies, as you can wrap it around the top bar and bang, you have a good stable platform to use.

I've been there twice this month. On the second stay I actually went to reception after the first day to change to the other side of the hotel. Much better view and less road noise. There's a lot of traffic in Jakarta :)
Every morning, at around 4.30am, the closest Mosque (in the pictures) would start with the call to prayer, then gradually over the city I could hear the echo's of the other Mosques drifting in over the rising mists. Pretty surreal.
I'd set the alarm for 30-45 mins before sunrise, get up and check the sunrise. Some days there was nothing due to the heavy haze. I'd then hop back into bed for another 1hr of sleep :) But if conditions were good, out with the EM-1 and Gorillapod!

There was some much going on down in the streets, even very early, with vendors pushing their carts and parents getting their kids to school. And lots of cats :) Most without tails, but they prowled around the morning streets, their kingdom until the people came.
